silphium - ancient Roman birth control herb?

Silphium - Wikipedia

I read an interesting theory that the herb is part of the reason why the Roman Empire collapsed. The popularity of the herb meant they couldn't recruit enough soldiers. The herb was so popular they put it on coins and planted it everywhere.

Demographic studies suggest that the Roman world should have had a population explosion due to a low disease rate, plentiful food, and relatively few civilian war deaths. Some have seized on the fact that it didn’t as evidence that people of the era had access to effective birth control.
