rocket artillery is superior

Finland invested heavily in rocket artillery because their military budget is limited, and they can't afford to waste money when it comes to deterring Russia.

Interestingly enough, Finland uses a US design, the M270 mobile rocket launcher.

Advantages of rocket artillery include:

-greater range and rate of fire
-easier to shoot and scoot (fire and move to avoid return fire)
-can be fired from lighter vehicles
-very hard to shoot down as compared to drones
-has an area of effect

The Soviets and later Russians heavily favored rocket artillery based on their experience in WW2.

Although howitzers and other cannons are cheaper, the barrels wear out after a few thousand rounds. The US has been struggling to supply Ukraine with both cannons and shells. There is only one factory in the US that makes cannon barrels and only one that makes shells.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, various American high-tech weapons like F-16s, HIMARS, and Bradleys have been touted. Unguided rocket artillery like the BM-21 Grad which could be acquired from many countries and are already familiar to Ukrainian troops.

Military spending in many countries is driven by politics rather than strategy, and that is a fatal flaw.

Kamikaze drones have their place, but rockets are cheaper and more effective overall.
